By the end of the decade, the CAF fleet included medium and heavy bombers such as the North American B-25 Mitchell, B-17, Consolidated B-24 Liberator. The CAF created a new Rebel Field at Harlingen, Texas when they moved there in 1968, occupying three large buildings including 26,000 square feet (2,400 m 2) of museum space. In 1965, the first museum building was completed at old Rebel Field, Mercedes, Texas. Their first airshow was held on March 10, 1963. By 1963, the group had achieved their goal of acquiring one of each American World War II fighter plane. By the end of the year, there were nine aircraft in the CAF fleet. On September 6, 1961, the CAF was chartered as a nonprofit Texas corporation to restore and preserve World War II-era combat aircraft. The warbirds that remained airworthy were mostly in private hands modified for air racing or had been converted for commercial use as air freighters and aerial firefighters. The CAF colonels were shocked to find that the aircraft which played such a major role in winning World War II were being rapidly and systematically scrapped as obsolete with no efforts, not even by the Air Force or Navy, to preserve any for display for future generations. In 1960, the CAF began to seriously search for other World War II aircraft. Army Air Forces and the United States Navy. Along with the P-51, this gave the pilots the two most-advanced piston-engine fighters to see service with the U.S. In 1958, the group made their second purchase of two Grumman F8F Bearcats for $805 each.

With the purchase of the Mustang, known as "Red Nose", the group that became the CAF was unofficially founded. In 1957, Lloyd Nolen and four friends purchased a P-51 Mustang, each sharing in the $1,500 cost of the aircraft. She enjoys flying her Trainer and a 1/5 scale Taube. The P-51D "Red Nose" was the first airplane of the CAF. It should also be noted that Jennifer is an R/C Pilot. Adam flew his craft in a way that should not have been possible and was quite a show. BRAVO! The plane photos are of Adam flying at the noon show with Jennifer along side for a touch of realism. What a great way to add realism and class to the event. Bob Keirbley from Middletown, NJ and Adam and Jennifer Lilly of Fairfield, NJ dressed in 40’s Army Air Corp attire. This first group of photos in my opinion gets my award for extra effort. Needless to say Lindsey now understands my passion for Aero-Modeling now and has requested to watch me fly something of my own before she has to return to Alabama. She is a darn good photographer as well so some of her pictures are mixed in with the postings. She was also overwhelmed with the event and had an awesome time as well. I have not seen her in two years as she lives in Alabama and runs a Doggie Daycare and has little time off. This event also brought a new closeness with my daughter Lindsey and I. It just does not get any better than combining two passions and have fun doing it!

I opted to, after seeing the big picture to only take in-flight photos of planes during the noon show because of the ‘Giant’ number of models in attendance.įor those of you that do not know me: I am an Aero-Modeler myself and Freelance Professional Photographer on the side. From a photographers point of view there was simply too much to shoot in the 5 hours I spent there. At the flight line was constant flying of all kinds of Giant Scale Military model aircraft. I spent 5 hours at Warbirds Over Delaware on Saturday and the following posts are a record of my visit and experiences.įirst I would like to say AWESOME! This was my first visit to this event and was definitely overwhelmed with the whole thing.
